Don't blame restaurant industry for obesity
To the editor:
In regard to a recent article in the Review-Journal ("Concern about waists grows," Nov. 4), I wish to commend reporter Joelle Babula for recognizing the importance of physical activity in obtaining a healthy lifestyle. Food alone cannot be, and is not, responsible for obesity among some Americans.
Obesity is a complex issue that deserves sensible solutions. There are numerous factors that contribute to overweight and obesity, including personal responsibility, as overweight conditions result from an imbalance of energy in and energy out.
Providing myriad food options to satisfy the tastes and dietary needs of a diverse population, restaurants are part of the solution, and have a longtime commitment to promoting healthy lifestyle and the need for nutrition and physical education programs.
Seventy-six percent of all meals are eaten at home. When Americans do dine out, the nation's 870,000 restaurants offer a variety of menu items and venues, including nutritious alternatives and items made-to-order to fit a diner's individual needs.
In addition, National Restaurant Association research shows that 95 percent of Americans feel qualified to make their own dietary choices, and more than two out of three say they are tired of the "food police" telling them what to include in, or exclude from, their diets.
Dietary experts agree that all foods can be part of a healthy diet -- foods that are available on restaurant menus everywhere. The key to a healthy lifestyle is through balance, moderation and exercise, all of which require personal responsibility.
