Restaurants Unite to Help Haiti
Industry-wide effort to raise funds for earthquake victims in Haiti
The restaurant industry in the United States has always been among the first to participate in community affairs. Their combined efforts often help raise awareness of and help motivate public interest for many environmental, political and humanitarian programs. Especially in times of crisis, restaurants always heed the call for action by providing financial aid and support for victims of natural disasters.
 On January 12, 2010 a devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit the city of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. This massive quake left over 170,000 dead and thousands more injured. Homeless, hungry and desperate for medical care, the people of Haiti need the help of Nevada restaurants during this time of crisis.
The National Restaurant Association and the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF) have teamed up with the Share Our Strength organization to create the Restaurants for Relief-Haiti fundraising program. This new program expands upon the existing Restaurants for Relief, which raised almost $1 million in aid from the nation’s restaurants for victims of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Share our Strength guarantees that 100 percent of funds raised in the Restaurants for Relief-Haiti program will be donated to competent relief organizations with the expertise and capacity to provide aid in emergency situations. Funds raised through the Restaurants for Relief-Haiti program will help provide shelter, medical treatment, food and other assistance for earthquake victims. Restaurants can participate by:
- Donating a portion of sales from a day, a week, or even a specific menu item
- Collecting donations from patrons, or directing them to www.strength.org/haiti to make online donations
- Encouraging employees to make individual donations and matching whatever funds are raised
- Displaying the following marketable materials to raise awareness: Bill Stuffer, Poster, and Small Table Tent
