The ProStart Program is a 2-year high school culinary training course, taken as an elective class [such as a language or music course]. The program is 350 hours of instruction and 400 hours of an industry work experience. After passing the exams for Year 1, Year 2, and completing the competencies, students receive a certificate from the National Restaurant Association and an opportunity for scholarships. The Nevada Hospitality Foundation implements the program statewide in partnership with the Nevada Restaurant Association. Students learn topics such as: food safety, knife cuts, basic cooking techniques, baking, menu design, basic accounting, costing, and restaurant management.
We are proud to teach this curriculum in 40 schools statewide with over 25,000 students enrolled and counting!
Congratulations to our 2019 Nevada ProStart Champions representing Coronado High School in Culinary and AACT in Reno for Management! Both teams will be representing Nevada at the National ProStart competition in Washington D.C.
Prostart Mentor Award 2019 The Nevada Restaurant Association Educational Fountation would like to honor a very special mentor, who has supported his students over the past 3 years. The 2019 Mentor of the Year is Chef Cesario Montesdeoca – SODEXO , the mentor for West Prep!
Chef Cesario Has been the mentor for West Prep for the last three years. He started mentoring us as we began our ProStart Experience and has help to build our program. Chef Cesario is the executive chef at Mountain View Hospital. He makes time to work with both students and instructor during his leaving the hospital and returning to work after working with the students. He models a professional work ethic and positive professional interaction with the students. He makes learning fun. We have learned so much from him and we are very thankful that he has donated his time and experience as our mentor.
