ASCAP

What Is ASCAP?

ASCAP (the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) is a not-for-profit membership organization representing over 1 million songwriters, composers, and music publishers -- covering more than 20 million musical works. ASCAP collects licensing fees from businesses that play music publicly and distributes nearly 90 cents of every dollar collected back to its members as royalties.

A single ASCAP blanket license gives your establishment legal permission to play any song in the ASCAP catalog -- no need to track individual songs or get separate permissions for each track. If you play music at your restaurant or bar, you likely need both an ASCAP and a BMI license, as each organization represents a different catalog of artists.
